Incorporated in 1867, the Maine Dental Association (MDA) is a professional membership organization of licensed dentists whose object is “to provide representation, information and other services for the dentist members and, through the dentist members, promote the health and welfare of the people of the State of Maine.”
The MDA is a constituent society of the American Dental Association (ADA), headquartered in Chicago, and is composed of ten local component societies:

* Androscoggin Valley Dental Society
* Kennebec Valley Dental Society
* Aroostook County Dental Society
* Penobscot Valley Dental Society
* Hancock County Dental Society

To qualify for Active membership in the Maine Dental Association, a dentist must be licensed and practicing in Maine. Membership is tripartite, meaning dentists must join at the local, state, and national level at the same time. Membership is voluntary, and the MDA traditionally has over a 90% of the practicing dentists in the state as members.
The MDA provides a variety of services to its members, including continuing education opportunities, legislative and regulatory advocacy, and benefits such as group health insurance and practice-enhancing services.
