From its origins in the early 1960’s the IAOMS has been a friendly community of surgeons, bound together by a common enthusiasm for the well-being of their patients and the advancement of their specialty. Its structure has evolved as its membership has grown.
Now the IAOMS sits atop a pyramid of regional and national associations of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. It has a permanent office in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, USA, a permanent executive secretary in the form of the ever industrious Lynne Sayler, and an executive committee of top surgeons from all four corners of the globe.
The executive committee remains in post for 2 years with the transfer of power occurring at the IAOMS biennial congress. It is led by a President, who is flanked by the immediate past President and the President elect. Further more each ‘regional’ association of oral and maxillofacial surgeons (North America, South America, Europe and Austral-Asia) appoints a representative and there are three 'at large' members of the committee. There are seven non-voting members of the executive committee who are the executive director, assistant executive director, Editor of International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IJOMS), the Education Committee Chairman, Research Committee Chairmen, the editor if the Association’s Newsletter, a representative of the IAOMS Foundation (an independent but affiliated charity), and the chairman of the organizing committee for the next congre
