The interdisciplinary Health Science Studies (HSS) major is for students planning to enter graduate or professional programs in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, public health, physician’s assistant, physical therapy, sports medicine, and veterinary medicine.
The goal of the Health Science Studies Major is to educate students with excellent and distinctive preparation for their professional careers. This includes mastery of the traditional disciplinary science courses in a program that stresses ethical, psychological, and humanistic understanding; experiential learning; and integrative learning. The interdiscipnary aspect of the HSS major is extended through a system of electives that allows students to focus their interest in three supporting academic areas.
While providing students with a strong interdisciplinary mix of essential mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, the major emphasizes are inherently interdisciplinary and synthetic approach to scientific problem solving. HSS Major also includes course opportunities that relate science to society, and many contemporary texts include societal linkages along with science. Careful selection of a minor to complement the major is an important aspect of this educational program. Majors will be counseled to select from a variety of minors at Brevard College.
