Job Description
Position summary:
Treat periodontal disease. Clean teeth and examine oral areas, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. Educate patients on oral hygiene. Take and develop x-rays. Apply fluoride and sealants.
Tasks: Patient Care
- Perform prophy or scaling and root planing
- Apply fluorides to arrest tooth decay
- Expose and develop dental radiographs
- Schedule patient’s next visit at the appropriate interval
- Coordinate unscheduled treatment with patient and treatment coordinator
- Coordinate patient recall
Patient Education
Instruct patient in oral hygiene and plaque control programs
Educate patients on current dental issues, including:
- Bruxism
- TMJD
- Teeth straightening
- Fractured teeth
- Old mercury fillings
- Replacing missing teeth
Disease education may include:
- Link between periodontal disease and diabetes
- Link between periodontal disease and endocarditis
- Link between periodontal disease and hypertension and other cardiac problems
Collaboration
- Present each case succinctly to dentist highlighting current problems
- Communicate with team members concerning patient needs
